The first step to filing any property claim is to determine the extent of the damage! You don’t want to file a claim  if you don’t have any covered damage. Claims that lead to denials or no damage findings lead to a claim history and will affect your premiums and even cause your carrier to drop your coverage. The best way to avoid this situation is to have your property inspected by a licensed contractor who knows how to read and interpret your insurance policy.

How do you choose someone who is qualified to inspect your property for covered damages? First off you need a contractor who is very familiar with insurance type work as it is often laden with paperwork and if that paperwork isn’t done properly your coverage can be waived. Secondly chose someone who is well-rounded in their skill set. You need an expert to inspect your entire property not just the roof. Often times a roofer is not qualified to inspect siding, windows, doors even possible foundation and structural damage caused by high winds that the untrained eye cannot see.

Call your agent when you file a claim, let your agent know who you have selected as your contractor, send your agent progress updates throughout the process. A good contractor with a strong knowledge of the insurance industry will keep your agent informed throughout the process. You should keep photographs of the damages being repaired.
